In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
Dear Brothers and sisters in Christ!
The salvific struggle of the God-Man is accomplished. The Mystery is great— God became incarnated and died. Even a brief acquaintance with the writings of great God inspired Fathers such as St. Kirill of Alexandria, St. Afanasii The Great, St. Leo the Pope of Rome reveals to our spiritual vision the immeasurable depths of this mystery. To fully understand this mystery is impossible for man or angel. But despite our weak understanding of this theological truth we must approach our Saviour not only with love and gratitude but also with fear and trembling. We have not all received the gift to theologize, but all of us can begin to correct our lives and by that means take part with Christ in the struggle for our salvation.
Christ our God struggled for us expecting nothing in return. In the Holy Scripture the prophets describe him as a man of grief and sorrow. What in fact did he receive in return for his labors? He receives torture, and death from the hands of those who he came to save. And how do we fulfill our responsibilities as Christians? We constantly expect attention, recognition, rewards and praise. This is obviously not the path of Christ. Our labors frequently are accompanied by complaining, self-justification, hypocrisy, and self-praise. Perhaps our main illness is our self-absorption. This preoccupation with our selves lies at the basis of all of our spiritual and psychological aliments.
Our chronic over-sensitivity fears any criticism, ill will, and judgment. And despite our attitude, which is not Christ-like, we call ourselves Christians and expect to resurrect with Christ and inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. However if we continue in such a state there is no way that our hopes will be realized. We will remain here in this world with our worldly understanding, and perhaps here we will receive some kind of reward, however there those who dwell in Heaven will reject us. And it is indeed doubtful to expect a reward here from those who follow the principles and caprices of this world. The prince of this world and his associates are very deceiving. They make promises and then deceive and we in turn are frequently disappointed. This is the reason we feel so little joy, because we seek joy there where we can never find it. We place our trust there where we will never find satisfaction for the deepest needs of our spirit. We are enamored and embrace that which we should not be enamored with and not embrace, that is the world its pleasure and our passions. Even those who we call our nearest and dearest can become for us like porcupines. A person embraces a porcupine closely and then cries out that he is in pain.
St Theodore the Studite writes about the sufferings of Christ and advises us how we should conduct ourselves. He write, “Those who are attentive with all their soul to Christ’s sufferings never are angry, never are scandalized, never are proud, never are jealous and never act maliciously against their neighbor. They never converse just because they love to babble, but rather humble themselves, are contrite, consider themselves as the dust of the earth, desiring to take part in Christ’s sufferings and seek to die with Him in order to enjoy the glory of His resurrection.”
Dear brothers and sisters let us now make a decision before this Holy Shroud to once and for all cease being stubborn, high minded and proud. Let us turn to our Saviour with full recognition of our powerlessness to correct ourselves. Let us cease wallowing in the swamp of self-deception, there where no true joy is to be found.
For us there will only be absolute fulfillment when we finally give ourselves over fully, heart and soul to Christ our God.

Спасительное дело Богочеловека совершилась. Великая тайна, Бог воплотился и умер. Даже короткое знакомство с писаниями великих боговдоховенных отцов, например, Кирилл Александрийский, Афанасий Великий, Лев папа Римский открывает нашему духовному взору ума непостижимую глубину этого таинства. Полностью до конца понимать это таинство невозможно ангелу и человеку. Но несмотря на наше слабое понимание этой богословской истины, мы должны подойти к нашему Спасителю не только с любовью и благодарностью, но также со страхом и трепетом. Мы с Вами не получили дара богословствовать, но все мы можем начинать исправление нашей жизни и этим участвовать со Христом в подвиге спасения наших душ.
Христос Бог наш совершил свое дело ничего не ожидая. В Священном Писании святые пророки описывают его как человек скорби и печалей. На самом деле что он получил? Он получил мучение и смерть от тех людей которых пришел спасать. А мы с Вами как мы совершаем наши обязанности как христиане? Мы постоянно ожидаем внимания, признания, утешения, награды и похвала. И это явно не является путем Христа Спасителя. Наше дело часто сопровождается ропотом, самооправдания, лицемерия и самохваления. Быть может главная наша болезнь это есть наша самозанятность. Это самозанятность лежит во основе всех наших душевных и психологических проблем.
Наша болезненная чувствительность боится всякого осуждения, злословие и критики, но не смотря на наше не христоподобное настроение, мы всетаки называем себя христианами и ожидаем совоскреснуть со Христом и наследовать Царство Небесное. Но если мы продолжим так размышлять, ни в коем случае с нами кончиться хорошо. Мы останемся здесь в этом мире с нашими мирскими понятиями, и может быть получим какую-то награду здесь и нам откажутся, и от нас откажутся небожители там. И даже сомнительно говорит о награде здесь для тех, которые следуют по принципам и капризам этого мира. Князь этого мира и его последователи бывают очень обманчивые. Нам обещают, но часто обманывают, и поэтому мы разочароваемся. Вот почему мы не чувствуем радость, мы не чувствуем радости, потому что мы ищем радость там где ее нет. Мы доверяем там где постоянство нет и где мы никогда не можем удовлетворять самых глубоких требовании нашего духа. Мы влюбляемся и обнимаем то что мы не должны и обнимать, т. е., мир, его развлечения. Даже те которые мы называем своими близкими могут быть для нас дикобразы. Человек обнимает крепко дикобраза и потом плачет что ему больно.
Преп. Феодор Студит пишет о страданиях Христовых и нам советует как правильно поступать, “Кто внимает сему от всей души своей, тот никогда не гневается, не соблазняется, не гордится, не завидует и не враждует против брата своего, не любит высказываться по славолюбию, но смиряется, сокрушается, и считает себя землею и пеплом, желает быть общником страстей Христовых и тщится умереть за Христа, дабы насладиться и славы воскресения Его”.
Приимемъ решение сегодня, дорогие братья и сестры, раз и навсегда отказаться от упрямства, высокоумия и гордении, обратимся к нашему Спасителю с полным признанием нашего безсилия исправляться. Перестанем наслаждаться в болоте самообмана. Там где никакой радости нету. Для нашей души полное удовлетворение будет только тогда, когда мы наконец отдаем себе полностью сердцем и душою Христу Богу нашему. Аминь.
