As is fitting, the Nativity of our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ is celebrated with great solemnity, adhering to all of the traditions of the Church typicon.
The Eve was celebrated on January 6 (New Style), having been prefaced by Vespers and Matins the evening before. On the day, the Royal Hours were served in the morning at 8AM. After a small break, there was the Meeting of the bishop, His Grace Bishop Luke, followed by the Vesperal Liturgy of St. Basil. During the Entrance, His Grace awarded three of the hieromonks of the monastery with the blessing of the Synod. Father Igumen Cyprian was awarded the Jeweled Cross. Fathers Anatoly and Gabriel were awarded the Palitsa, all for their zeal and dedication to their obediences.
As is the tradition, at the end of the service, there was no meal until 5PM, when the meal of the day was served.
At 7PM began the Vigil, with Great Compline, Litya and Matins. His Grace Bishop Luke served the Polyleos. Despite the inclement weather, many people were able to be present for this festal service, which contains beautiful hymns dedicated to the Nativiity of our Lord.
On Christmas Day itself, the Meeting of the Bishop was at 9AM, followed by the Hours and Divine Liturgy. Again, despite the wintry weather, the church was filled with the faithful, some who came from a distance. After the solemn liturgy, all were invited to partake of a bountiful and festive lunch. This was followed by a reception in Vladyka’s office, started by a short moleben and followed by caroling. The singing was organized by Protodeacon Michael Pavuk and his family and was joined by many of our neighbors. This added a very warm atmosphere to the reception. Vladyka treated his guests to many savory and sweet foods with Greek coffee.
On the 2nd day of Holy Nativity, the Synaxis of the Theotokos, His Eminence Archbishop Gabriel arrived to the monastery to concelebrate with Vladyka Luke and share the feast with the brethren. His Eminence is always so gracious to join us on the major feast days.
Once again, on the 3rd Day of Nativiity, Vladyka Luke headed up the Divine Liturgy, and thus we fulfilled the Typicon in our celebration of the Lord’s Nativity.
