The Funeral of Mitred Archpriest Wsewolod Drobot
The Funeral of Mitred Archpriest Wsewolod Drobot
November 11, 2017

On Saturday, November 11, 2017, the funeral and burial of Fr. Wsewolod took place at his beloved Holy Trinity Monastery.  Fr. Wsewolod was the rector of the Holy Nativity of the Mother of God parish in Albany for 50 years, but he also labored within the Holy Trinity Monastery, even earlier, partaking in many aspects of the life of the monastery.  So it was only fitting that the monastery served as the place of his funeral.

Due to circumstances which could not be helped, Metropolitan Hilarion was unable to lead the funeral services, and in his place, Bishop Jerome came to head up the services.  Serving with him were many priests from all over the country and abroad, including relatives of Fr. Wsewolod from France.

The funeral services of a priest are quite lengthy with extra Gospel readings and are in many ways closer to a full matins service.  The clergy took turns doing the readings and the monastery choir sang with compunction the many appointed hymns and verses.  The “last kiss” took a very long time as hundreds of people attended the service.  Not only neighbors and many pilgrims but also noted was the presence of many if not most of the parish from Albany, including several generations that had been Fr. Wsewolod’s spiritual children.  It should be noted that due to Father’s long tenure in Albany, he raised a parish which had started out as a poor mission of the monastery, founded by refugees from war-torn Europe, to be a flourishing and growing parish which was able to build a beautiful Russian style church with a hall, all under his untiring spiritual guidance and direction.  One might say that this is the jewel in the crown of Fr. Wsewolod.

The elder of the brethren of the monastery will always remember how Fr. Wsewolod and his Matushka, Nadezhda, were very much part of the life of the monastery for over fifty years.  Father graduated from the seminary here and even though he was assigned to a parish, on weekdays he often came to the monastery services and served with the monastery clergy.  He also participated in the work of the monastery, especially in the bakery, helping the fathers in baking prosphora.  One also must mention that he and his family prepared the borscht every year for the monastery altar feast of Pentecost, and his borscht has yet to be surpassed in its taste.

The monastery community will miss Fr. Wsewolod, and we will always keep him and Matushka in our prayers, commemorating them at the Divine Liturgy in thankful remembrance of their love of the Church and the monastery and their great example of piety and faithfulness to Christ.
