A uniquely great feast in the Russian Orthodox Church is the feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. In other local Orthodox churches, this feast is considered a minor feast, but the Russian Orthodox celebrate this feast as if it were one of the great feasts in honor of the Mother of God, to whom Russia has always been especially dedicated.
The monastery has among its many holy things a piece of the Belt, or Sash, of the Theotokos, placed in the festal icon of the Protection.
Also commemorated on this feast is the Venerable Roman, the Melodist, considered the patron saint of church chanters. It has been traditional in the monastery on this feast, therefore, to especially commemorate our choir directors, living and reposed and those who embellish our services with their singing.
