Feast of Theophany
Feast of Theophany

The rubrics for the celebration of Theophany mirror those for the feast of the Lord’s Nativity.  In the ancient Church there was one feast which celebrated the Lord’s appearance into the world.  Later, the Church thought it beneficial for the faithful to celebrate these two events in sacred history separately.

In the monastery, on the Eve of Theophany, due to the fact that Theophany itself fell on a Sunday, the Royal Hours were celebrated on Friday without the Divine Liturgy.  On the Eve itself, the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was celebrated by His Grace Bishop Luke, together with the monastery clergy.  This was followed immediately by Great Vespers for the feast, which itself was followed by the Greater Blessing of Water in the Baptism Chapel of the belltower.

This day was a strict fast day, with only one meal being served.  It was served after all of the rooms of the monastery/seminary were blessed with holy water by the monastery hieromonks.  In the evening the Vigil was served with Great Compline, Litya and Matins.

Since the feast fell on a Sunday, it replaced the Sunday service, being a feast of the Lord.  His Grace Vladyka Luke served the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil, together with the monastery clergy, followed by the Greater Blessing of Water at the belltower.
